.Key considerations for the successful use of pharmacy teams in acute medical services. To evaluate the utility and effectiveness of team-based care in the acute medical setting and assess key factors that impact the successful implementation of team-based models of care. Telephone survey. Fifty randomly selected acute care centers located in the Atlantic Canadian provinces. Staff from 32 acute medical services centers completed a structured telephone survey. An expert panel determined the adequacy of responses. Quantitative analysis was completed by using SPSS version 10.0. Qualitative data were collected and organized using content analysis. Of the 104 respondents, 98 (95%) reported that there was a pharmacy department within the acute medical services center. Eighty-five respondents (83%) indicated that they have employed a team-based approach to care of the medically ill patient. The majority of respondents reported that the average number of physicians that participated in their team was 5-6 (95%), that the number of pharmacists was 2-3 (66%), and that the number of pharmacy technicians ranged from 1-3. Respondents indicated that team-based care in their center improved access to specialty services, improved the quality of care, improved timeliness of care, and improved professional and patient satisfaction. Respondents also reported that the greatest challenges to the implementation of a team-based approach to care were: having a minimal number of medical specialties on the team (82%), access to a small number of pharmacists/technicians (82%), having not sufficient financial resources to support the team (79%), and not having medical services leadership support (78%). Overall, respondents felt that a team-based approach to care of the medically ill patient provided the best care for the patient and was of most benefit to the patient. Respondents reported that a team-based approach in the acute medical services centers did not require additional personnel, advanced resources, or higher salaries and, as such, it was cost-effective.Toxicity tests with four fluoranthene analogues.
